HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Widely recognized as the cradle of human civilization, Iraq has a rich heritage dating back nearly 6000 years. Hammurabi, King of Babylon from 1792-1750 BC, codified the first laws of ancient civilization and gave special attention to governing the practice of medicine. During the Dark Ages in Europe, Baghdad was the intellectual capital of humanity, a vibrant metropolis whose centers of learning, particularly in the health sciences, remained unrivaled for many centuries.
Professionals of Iraqi descent represent a continuation of this lineage as they continue to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and of their societies throughout the world by achievements not only in medicine and science, but also in literature, music, poetry, and history. IMSA seeks to share and enhance their achievements for the benefit of all people.
